Up Close and PersonalThis "show" helped me learn interviewing skills. My script is below and to the right.
Good afternoon and welcome to "Up Close and Personal." The talk show that doesn't stay a safe distance away from the truth. I'm your host Tricia Tauer and today we are getting down to business with teens. Literally. Since the ecomomy's downfall, the number of high school students taking on part time work has increased significantly. Today, we will be looking at the reasons behind this inflation and the affect taking on a job has on the average teen. To do this we will be traveling to Becker High School to talk to just one of the 106,000 employed students in Minnesota. It's time to meet Shawna Gilyard. It's time to get up close and personal. 1. Shawna, I understand that you are one of the many students here at Becker High School that also uphold a part time job. Could you tell us where you work, how long you've been working there, and what you do? 2. Do you like working there? Is there anything you are working towards? 3. You seem very driven! Some teens are "forced" so to speak by their parents to get a job. Why did you apply for a job? Did your parents influence this decision? 4. Part time work is obviously mainly to have some extra cash on hand. Is there anything you are saving for or are you just enjoying going out to a few more movies with your friends? 5. Saving up for college is the main 'pro' when teens consider taking a part time job. However, the main 'con' is stress. Do you feel overwhelmed with going to school for eight hours, working for four, and THEN having to worry about your homework? 6. Is there anything you feel you are missing out on, due to having a job? | Like Shawna, teens throughout Minnesota are taking on part time jobs mainly to save up for college. And with college as expensive as it is today, teens working through high school is a logical solution. But the responsibility required to balanbe those all important grades, while maintaining a job and trying to squeeze in some fun into those teen years should not be overlooked. It certainly takes a special teen to handle the stress. Working teens will need to practice good time and money management skills. But above all, the student must be driven. Like anything in life, in order to be successful they have to want to be there. Thank YOU for being here with us as we've explored teen employment. I'm Tricia Tauer and this has been up close and personal. See you next time! |
